Discovering Success
As a young child, I remember studying history and learning about all the great people who accomplished extraordinary feats during the course of their lifetime. Some of their ideas and work even altered the course of history itself. I often wondered what it would be like to be Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Ludwig van Beethoven or any of the other figures I saw as heroes. As I grew older, I learned more about these famous people and realized while they all possessed extraordinary talents, they also faced great adversities. Even more remarkable was seeing that the process that carried them into greatness exposed them to be very human. A thought originated in my young mind…can all humans achieve great things?
Human Potential
Can all human beings achieve great things? Over the years, I have interacted with people from all walks of life and I have to admit that factors such as opportunity and education appear to play important roles in achieving great success. That said, there are people who still touched greatness after overcoming these obstacles along their path. My end realization was that while all people may not encounter all the factors necessary to produce history altering results, ALL human beings have the ability to live significantly above the dreams they currently pursue. I believe we have been gifted the potential to touch greatness in a way that is meaningful to us and that our minds are often smaller than our potential.
Failure
Once I realized that all human beings have the potential to achieve their dreams, I was forced to ask a very important question. If we all have the potential to become successful, then why do a majority of the people consistently fail to reach their goals? Actually, it was this second question that made the first question (Do all people have the potential to succeed) so hard to answer. To me, it seemed that if all people had the potential to reach their dreams, then more people would be doing it. But the fact of the matter is that most people fail to reach their full potential.
Facing Reality
Growing up, I read all the popular self-improvement books, went to all the popular seminars and heard some great speakers. I have no doubts that they provided me with tools that would help me shape my life’s destiny, but…the question still remained. If people were receiving the education and correct information, then why were people still failing to reach their dreams? There had to be more than just learning how to formulate goals, improving time management and streamlining methods of planning, prioritizing and executing tasks. There had to be something missing. I wanted to face reality and understand why we consistently fail.
A Quest for Truth
And so I began a quest for what was true in the area of personal development, but I decided to take an unorthodox approach. If I did not know what the answer to unlocking human potential was, then I would strive to understand why we often fall short of our goals. I felt that if I could find out why we habitually fail, then we could correct those weaknesses. The more I learned about what it is that holds us back from success, the more I discovered information and principles that I had never before encountered. And, as I started to rid my life of the habits that cause failure, then little by little, the truth started to become clearer.
It is my goal to help others discover these same lessons about themselves and give them guidance on a better way of reaching for their dreams. My metaphor for the human being that reaches their full potential is that of both a thinker and a doer. Enter the path of the Warrior-Poet.
