foreword

Dear Michael,

It’s me, your older self. You’re in your fifties now, but it honestly feels like life just began. In some ways, you and I are very different, and in others, we're exactly the same. I’ve learned a lot about life since walking in your shoes. I learned these lessons the hard way, whether I was stuck in a state of procrastination or moving through the painful process of trial and error. And while some lessons only resonate when experienced, I thought I’d sit down and write you about the many challenges that are just fine to avoid. It’s my hope that insight provides inspiration, and that you move through life more smoothly than I did.

Before I go, I want you to know I like who you are. You’re a good kid and a kind human being. You have an earnest heart, and the space between your ears isn’t completely empty. Enjoy your journey and work hard toward the things you feel inclined to do. Remember that nobody knows you better than yourself, and that while your destiny will move you from your shoes to mine, the way you get there matters. May you find your way to the start of your authentic path, walk it daily, and maintain a positive outlook that allows you to embrace what is hard and appreciate what is not. I love you, and I’m cheering you on.

-Michael
